An Existential Crisis is a side quest in Divinity: Original Sin 2.

Quick walkthrough[]

  • Dig up Crispin.
  • Accept Crispin's "battle of wits."
    • Alternatively, delay it for another time.
  • Come out victorious.

Detailed walkthrough[]

Coming close to Crispin's grave, he will cry out for you to unbury him — in response to which he will claim to offer the wisdom of the ages as your reward: proclaiming himself "a bit of a philosopher." Selecting any dialogue option in response to this besides leaving has him challenge the Godwoken to a "battle of wits."

A soulbond is begun if you accept the offer, one which according to him measures which entity can better face the truth of their own essence. This contest does not decide the winner based on the truth value of the statements they have made; it is implied to measure confidence. — This is why all of the dialogue options tagged with "[Undead]" will work, and three of them are available for all three of the questions posed by Crispin, meaning that an undead character can easily complete the quest.

All of the dialogue options provided by other tags are 'correct', but they will not be sufficient since there are only two of them, per each of the two tags the player has, and faltering when confronted with just one of the questions will make Crispin the winner. Therefore a character who isn't undead has to read the volumes of "The Essence of Existence." then use the ideas written in those books when engaged in the soulbond.

  • Volume 1 is found beneath the painting of a landscape in the room where the player first meets Ryker.
  • Volume 2 is found next to the side entrance to the mansion.
  • Volume 3 is found on the upper floor, on the ground next to Ryker's bed.

After defeating him, the player is able to remove their finger from the outer side of Crispin's rib cage and Crispin dies while feeling what he describes as "existential agony."

Rewards[]

  • 9,650 experience

Notes[]

  • The dialogue options unlocked by reading the books are not specially labelled.
