Dragon Painting DOS2

Knight fighting Divine Order dragon

Dragons also known as the Ancient Ones are children of Ouroboros the god of dragons and the first beings to ever master the Source magic.

Background

Dragons, also called the Creator race are one of the oldest races to ever live upon Rivellon alongside the Eternals. Unlike Eternals, dragons are believed to have created Rivellon and many other worlds in the Divinity Universe.

They have been spotted since the advent of many Elder races such as elves and dwarves but eversince humans appeared they started to prefer them over the other races. Kidnapping their young children during the night and rising them as their own and during the time granting them their power until they became dragon knights.

Dragons granted many gifts to young races such as the gift of speech, dominion over fire, the shape of the wheel and much more. Despite being immortal however they started to slowly dissapear due to unknown circumstances.

Over the years, true Dragon sightings became increasingly rare to see and soon just disappeared completely - save for those few unlucky adventurers who ventured too close to a Dragon's lair. Since then, the Dragon Knights have been mistaken for true Dragons and have therefore also been named that. Both Dragon Knights and Dragons have dwindled in numbers since the death of the Divine by the hands of a Dragon Knight, hunted by Dragon Slayers. The Slayers have never brought down a fully grown Dragon, due to them thinking the Dragon Knights are true Dragons.

In spite of this dragons and their agents primary enemy were not the slayers but Damian himself.

During and after the Great War many small dragons have been captured by the Black Ring as well and have been drained of their will and serve as mounts and defenders of the Black Ring's fortresses.

Fully grown Dragons however are still rare and are presumed to be resting in their lairs (as with the Patriarch ) but by their own words, shoud be ready to come out in another year or a thousand - maybe.

Dragons come in many sizes and forms which they are able to change as they wish  if they have the power to do so. In their original form, dragons may be big as a horse, some large as a two store house and some may even be as large as a mountain. Usually the more powerful the dragon is the bigger it is. Dragons have two wings and are bipedal or quadrupedal but this doesnt limit them. Ancient dragons may change their form completely as they please. For example the Ancient Dragon Aurora changed herself into a beautiful woman. Not all dragons may change their form however and some are limited to only one form. This applies to Dragon knights who may switch only between their dragon and original form respectively.

Since Dragons are beings of magic they may have an affinity for certain kinds of elemental magic which is visible upon them. For example Fire Dragons are colored in red scales and Water or Ice Dragons have blue scales.

Culture

Nonetheless, I hate them for their blind attempt to eradicate all that is Draconic. They destroy so many of the phenomena given unto them by our mediators, the Dragon Knights. Heedlessly they crumble great sources of wisdom and beauty. That is why I despise them.

Possibly eversince the advent of the Dragon Slayers, there are no known building or places build by dragons although there are places which definitely show their influence. This is especially notable in temples and places dedicated to Maxos. These building have giant Dragon statues and towers whose peaks are held by stone wingless dragons. The indoor buildings often contain lightning in form of dragon heads with fire kept in their mouths which provide light.

As with all powerful beings, dragons are very proud beings. An ancient dragons also value wisdom, knowledge and honour above all else and they are known to willingly share it although that depends on the dragons mood, personality and whether they are not hungry.

Dragons are also known to possess have their own language which may be spoken only by dragons or dragon knights. One of the ways for non dragons to be able to correctly and succesfully pronounce or even cast a spell in draconic is the usage of drudanae.

The power of names

My name cannot be uttered here, for it is itself a spell of creation that would give different shape to these surroundings and would spawn new unheard-of species. Even dwelling on it in my mind may topple nearby statues or push new breeds of flowers from the ground.

Ancient Dragons being the oldest source masters wield untold and divine powers. Even their names bear that power and because of this are True Dragons known by nicknames or other names and titles such as Patriarch the Black. Only when the dragon has been slain may its name be spoken without encountering side effects.

Species

They are empty husks, soulless shells bereft of all that made them part of the Ancient Race. Pity them if you meet them, and give them a swift death.

Despite the dwingling number of original dragons there are still many younger and smaller dragons roaming Rivellon and count as members of the species due to sharing their magic and origins with Ancient Dragons.

The only known exception are dragons enslaved by the Black Ring in Divinity II: Dragon Knight Saga which had lost their free will and serve only as Black Ring mounts and pets.
