By the Quill-That-Lasts-A-Billion-Words, what's this? What are you doing here, where the very stars come to die? Who are you and where have you come from?
Zixzax, on first seeing the Guardians Divinity: Original Sin

ZixZax the Almost-Wise, sometimes referred to as Zixzax, is an imp historian who has travelled Rivellon for eons in his quest for preserving knowledge.

Background[]

ZixZax is an imp historian of unknown origin who was ordered by the Gods to record the history of everything. During his travels he came across many prominent figures about which he wrote books and taught magic to aspiring mages such as Icara. During his quest for knowledge he discovered that the time itself will come to an end. This discovery pushed him to search for a way to prevent such an event to occur. One day he came upon a Star Stone at the border of Nemesis a distorted plane where the Ranaar reside. This stone led him to the End of Time where he was stuck until the Source Hunters arrived there in 4 AR and he gave them the red Teleporter Pyramid in his gratitude as he could now freely travel once more. However this freedom was cut short for he had to request the Source Hunters help once more as the Homestead was under an attack. Outside of this ZixZax helped the Source Hunters in their quest to make 30-Year Old Whisky. [1]

Several centuries later he reappear at Stormfist Castle in 1218 AD where he approaches the Marked One Lucian and comments that he is perfectly in middle of Order and Chaos. After remarking that he would write a book about him he asks the Divine to let him look at the teleporter pyramids he is carrying. ZixZax exclaims that he will use them to search for more Teleporter Pyramids as he steals them from the Divine. This theft left the Marked One effectively imprisoned at the castle as he was against his will, forced into a role of Lord Protector, a bodyguard of Janus Ferol. [2] [3]

During his travels ZixZax is imprisoned at the Council of the Seven by a Succubus who waited there for Zandalor and Lucian. The Succubus is subsequently slain by Lucian after he and Zandalor arrive at the Council. [4]With the Succubus slain ZixZax was freed and immediately confronted by the Divine about the theft. ZixZax willingly returns the Teleporter Pyramids and explains the Divine what he knows about the origins of the Lord of Chaos.

Little is known of his whereabouts directly after Lucians ascension, however in 1238 AD, there were sightings of an Imp Historian upon Nemesis a plane now ruled by demons from Hell who had overthrown the Ranaar. There he had helped a trapped Paladin and their Death Knight companion to escape from a hole by giving them Teleporter Pyramid.

Decades later in 1300 AD ZixZax encounters the last Dragon Knight at the Maxos Temple where he introduces himself to them and explains that he used the teleporter pyramids he stole from Lucian to travel between dimensions and due to Lucian keeping the pyramids after his conflict with the Black Ring he is now trapped in Rivellon. He remarks subsequently that this is the cause of his moniker 'Almost-Wise' as he cannot travel between dimensions with just the power of words. As an immortal historian he has acquired vast amount of knowledge which the Dragon Knight used to decipher parchments in archaic Common Rivellonian and lend George Gremory an ancient draconian dictionary. Trivia[]

  • The capitalisation of Zixzax's name varies from game to game. In Divine Divinity and Ego Draconis it's written as ZixZax, while in Original Sin it's written Zixzax.
  • Zixzax claims to have a different origin from other imps, ostensibly having never served demons.
  • Zixzax's manner of speech and appearance change from game to game. In earlier games he would match how other imps speak and dress in that particular game, but in Original Sin he wears much nicer clothes than other imps.
